A Child Life Specialist is different from a social worker. We are usually stationed in hospitals and have a deep understanding of children's growth and development at different ages, as well as familiarity with medical procedures. Therefore, we mainly use medical play, preparation, and education to help children overcome various challenges during treatment, allowing them to exert their own strength and courageously face pain and fear.
Currently, in Hong Kong, Child Life Specialists are not included in the medical structure and there are no corresponding training courses. Child Life Specialists in Hong Kong usually study related courses online and receive guidance from qualified internship mentors in the team to obtain internationally recognised professional qualifications.
The Child Life Specialist of the Children's Cancer Foundation, formerly known as Health/Hospital Play Specialists, has more responsibilities than just playing with paediatric patients. They mainly conduct treatment assessments for children, explain medical procedures in age-appropriate language, use play to preview and rehearse procedures, help children adapt to the hospital environment to reduce their fear and doubt, design and accompany them in playing games and making handicrafts to meet their individual needs and maintain their physical and mental development. They also observe the children during play to assist medical professionals in monitoring the progress of their condition.
"Conquer Challenges ahead with our Children" is the mission of Child Life Service. Every child will encounter various medical procedures on their journey of growth. Child Life Specialists play the role of companions, helping children overcome difficulties and serving as a bridge between medical professionals and the families of young patients. By combining the strengths of various parties, we help children overcome challenges.
